In an interview with HANSA, Sergio Machado, President of Transpetro shipping com pany, talks about the current situation of Brazilian shipyards and the company's fleet re newal programme on the basis of Transpetro being largest client to domestic shipbuilding industry. According to Machado, delays in delivery of the ships of the so-called Promef programme by Transpetro containing 49 orders of tankers and transport vessels are the inevitable consequence of a total restart in Brazilian shipbuilding which once had already ascended to rank four of the world's largest shipbuilders in terms of the backlog of orders. Nevertheless, of the many tankers ordered within the last ten years by Transpetro at Brazil ian yards, three have been actually delivered, as Machado concedes: »Celso Furtado« and recently »Sergio Buarque de Holanda« (both by Maud yard) and »}odo Candido« (built by EAS shipyard). Hence, technical malfunction occurs at every start, Machado says: »South Korea, for example, today among the biggest contractors worldwide, faced refusal of acceptance of the first two ships built there because technical specifications did not meet the shipowners expectations.« Those vessels already accepted by Transpetro, however, have been certified by international classification societies. Tanker »Joao Cdndido« caused costly maintenance but Machado calls the vessel »technically excellent« now that the repairs have been finished. To get the fleet renewal done, Transpetro had to order ships abroad, though this was not intented at the start.
