Soaringfreight rates and flagging container traffic growth put pressure on ocean freight forwarders this year. The biggest players scrambled to gain market share and compensate margin drops with cargo volume increases. Half-year reports released by the industry's largest providers, most of them based in Europe, show that the market leaders achieved volume gains well above average market growth. Kuehne + Nagel boosted the volume of cargo under its management in thefirst six months by 8 % to 1.7 mill. TEU. DHL Global Forwarding reported 4 % growth to 1.38mill. TEU while fellow German operator DB Schenker posted a 10.6 % gain to 926,100TEU. On the other hand, global full container load traffic is estimated to have gone up by only 3 to 3.5% last year. Above-average volume gains may have allowed forwarders to stabilise or even increase their net revenues and, more importantly, their gross profits. However, operating costs are likely to have grown even faster in many cases since the expanded handling volumes required greater man power and resources.
