Comfort in Solitude

I HAVE KNOWN GRETCHEN FREDERICK, one of the owners of Solitude Wool, for over 20 years. My children were very young when we first visited her farm. We met her Romney sheep and looked at her garden, and my children drank all the goat milk she had in her refrigerator! We have done many things together through the years, including a sheep-to-shawl team competition. In 2006, Gretchen and Sue Bundy, another shepherd, formed a unique yarn company. They focused on breed-specific yarn, which gives many sheep farmers an opportunity to sell their flocks' fleeces, including uncommon types of wool. Today, Solitude Wool is an all-woman company with five partners.
