Human Resources: June 1988, Hair, and the Beginning of Yugoslavia's End

In November 1992,1 visited Vukovar, once a midsize baroque city on the Croatian side of the river Danube. The "battle for Vukovar" had ended a year before, and it was this devastated city that gave visual identity to the series of Yugoslav wars that followed: cloudy and sinister skies, charred earth, rows of trees pruned by large artillery shells; streets, then neighborhoods, and finally the entire city turned to ruins.
