Editor's Introduction . Multiplying the Visual; Image and Object in the Nineteenth Century

"We have to go back more than a century." In 1975, with these words, Michel Foucault launched a quick commentary on the work of contemporary French artist Gerard Fromanger. The essay, "Photogenic Painting," folds time in order to shift a certain strain of nineteenth-century visual culture into adjacency with what would soon be known as postmodernism.
