摘要

A Chinese promise to spend $1.7 billion to clean up the industrially-polluted Songhua River near the Russian border has failed to allay Russian fears of continuing pollution on the mighty River Amur. Indeed, local member of parliament Boris Reznik has told Platts that China constitutes the greatest environmental threat to the world today. Reznik, who represents Russia's Far Eastern city of Khabarovsk in the Russian Duma, said that pollution on the Songhua is causing enormous contamination on the Amur - and even charged that this was responsible for a major outbreak of meningitis in the Khabarovsk region which has so far claimed at least 1,200 victims.
