At a meeting of the Vancouver City Council on 30 January 2006, the Council agreed to accept a contract offer of continuation of Contract Services with Veolia Water for Operation and Maintenance of the City's Wastewater Treatment Facilities for a further five years. The existing contract was entered into on March 15, 1993. A contract amendment was approved by the City on December 18, 2000 that extended that contract through December 31, 2005 with a provision for continued services under the original terms of the contract until terminated by either party with six months advance notice. The City received a letter from Veolia Water in December 2005 offering to extend the current agreement for five additional one-year terms through December 31, 2010. No other modifications to the contract were proposed and a six-month opt out clause at the City's choice has been maintained. According to the Council Minutes, the "adjustable" contract period is desirable to the City "in order to retain the current contract services while also allowing for the exploration of expanded service possibilities as a result of annexation and/or other circumstances."
