Utility Industry Backs Carbon Cap-and-Trade

Electricity production from coal is the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States. Until recently, opinion had been split within the power generation sector as to whether a federally mandated carbon cap-and-trade system would be a move in the right direction or a big misstep. Several industry trade associations opposed carbon caps. But with a growing number of states stepping in to fill the federal void with their own programs, there seems to be a growing consensus in the industry that a mandatory federal program is the way to go.
