Linkedln group Geomatics

On our Linkedln group Geomatics, currently heading towards one thousand members, associate professor and entrepreneur Bharat Lohani of India wonders which open-source for WebGIS development is used by fellow geomatics professionals. His query sets off as follows: "Until recently we have been working with MapGuide +PHP. We have also done some development using MapObjects +VB. We are currently evaluating the existing open-source systems which can serve our need for, firstly, good desktop GIS development, and secondly a server which can serve our GIS over the net.
