The efforts of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist after the destruction of Superstorm Sandy - including FEMA's first-of-its-kind mapping platform, the GeoPlatform - were recognised by Esri at its annual Federal GIS Conference held in Washington DC, USA, in February 2013. The company honoured FEMA with its prestigious 'Making a Difference Award', which recognises organisations doing exemplary work using geospatial technology. The award was presented at a special ceremony that was also attended by FEMA management and Esri president Jack Dangermond.
