Development of the Energy Sector in China and the 2030 Agenda: Towards a Sustainable Future

This article offers a detailed overview of recent developments in the Chinese energy sector. The emphasis here is on the recent changes in Chinese energy policy, with a focus on coal and the negative consequences of its use in the energy industry associated with deteriorating air quality and rising CO_2 emissions. In this article, we discuss the concept of sustainability and its application to the Chinese energy sector. We rely on all relevant documents dealing with Chinese strategy and objectives in the field of energy and Sustainable Development, for instance, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and 13th Five-Year Plan for Energy Development covering areas such as the environment, energy supply and infrastructure and governance.
