As part of a year-long series of articles designed to analyze the changes in our industry and sci-ence that have occurred during its history, members of the TLE Editorial Board and staff are digging though 20 years of monthly issues. This month we focus on business and staff changes that have taken place since the first issue of the magazine in 1982. Twenty years ago, the oil industry was experiencing a price and hiring boom. The price of oil was up, and optimism abounded. College students majoring in geoscience were being actively recruited, and many were able to choose between several job opportunities. Lured by higher salaries and less bureaucracy, many geophysicists left major oil companies to work for smaller independents. Acquisition of 3-D surveys was just beginning, but it would be two years before a commercial computer interpretation system would become available.
