摘要

The ongoing partnership of the Denver Geophysical Society (DGS) is an important example of how members through their local chapter can have a significant impact on the future of geophysics. The Denver Geophysical Society started support for student scholarships in 2008. It has supported 17 students, either Colorado high school graduates attending universities offering degrees in geosciences or out-of-state students attending Colorado universities pursuing degrees in the geosciences. Working with the SEG Foundation, DGS established a set of criteria to select merit-based scholarship recipients. The challenge in setting up a scholarship is balancing the donor objectives with the SEG Scholarship Committee procedures. DGS and the Foundation met to learn about each other's requirements. DGS's interest in benefiting local and regional students is commendable and consistent with many of SEG's societies. The SEG Scholarship Committee is a group of eight volunteers, each giving eight years of service, managed by Linda Ford, SEG grant programs administrator. Coordinating more than 70 scholarships is a huge task. Therefore, it is critical that our language is chosen carefully when we establish new scholarships.
