We appreciate that our research from Svalbard initiates interest and debate. Lukas et al. (2006) address some important questions related to the understanding of modern high-latitude glacial systems. They have evidently conducted a field study in exactly the same area (Lukas et al., 2005), during the finalization of our paper, and on this basis they advance serious objections to our work (Lukas et al., 2006).
