Zwischen Radikalität und Tradition

The recently completed redesign of the Schloss Schoenbrunn, the Schoenbrunner Schlossbruecke, by landscape architects Auboeck + Karasz and S & S architects is a composition of spatial elements which effectively draw the visitor towards the main structure and enhance its grandeur. The long spatial and visual axis leading to the castle expands to become a half-circle edged with two rows of trees providing an area for repose. The viewer can appreciate the entire breadth of the castle, now fully visible from this vantage point. The second task set forth in the international competition was the redesign of the bridge over the river in front of the castle which over time had been taken over as a parking lot. Flanked by symmetrical stripes of lawn, the middle area, which has the original lion and sphinx statue pairs in each corner, rises slightly in grade towards the castle. The design completed in 2005 restores views to the castle taking modern changes in the surroundings into account.%Ein internationaler ideenwettbewerb zum Umfeld von Schloss Schönbrunn in Wien "gab den Anlass, den Vorplatz neu zu gestalten. Dabei stallten die Landschaftsarchitekten die Raumabfoigen und die visuellen Bezüge zum Schloss wieder her. Als mich eine befreundete Landschaftsarchitektin aus Shanghai in Wien besuchte, bat sie mich, ihr neue Projekte in der österreichischen Hauptstadt zu zeigen. Ich entschied mich unter anderem für den Vorplatz des Schlosses Schönbrunn, die Schönbrunner Schlossbrücke, neugestaltet nach dem Entwurf der Landschaftsarchitekten Auböck + Käräsz. Dort angekommen sah mich die chinesische Freundin etwas ratlos an und fragte: „But don''t you have anything radical in Vienna? You know, something like Schouwburgplein by West 8 in Rotterdam ...?"
