There is a growing pressure to avoid use of hypochlorite as a reagent in treatment of effluent from surface finishing plants, since this results in increased salt concentrations in the effluent as well as formation of AOX products. Of the various alternatives, hydrogen peroxide appears to emerge as the preferred choice. However the reaction process is not quite as straightforward as that of hypochlorite, especially at very low or very high cyanide concentrations. By means of a combined process using hydrogen peroxide and electrolysis, and in some cases also using Carol's acid, good results can be obtained when proper process control is maintained.
