LURE OF THE DARK SIDE

Speirs and Major Associates has been providing advice to die Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew (a notable point given die gardens shut at dusk) for several years. Projects have included lighting for the Orangery, Alpine House and Pagoda. At the initial workshop for the crossing, which bridges a lake in the gardens, we suggested that it should be left dark, partly due to the fact that the rest of the landscape local to the lake was unlit, as were all the paths leading to it. There was also concern not to introduce light that would have an adverse effect on the fauna and flora given the specialist nature of the botanic gardens It was agreed that the crossing should be subdy illuminated, to create a landscape feature and to help reinforce architect John Pawsons idea of walking across the water.
