Landmark Blue Goose Market Gets New Home

The Blue Goose Market has been a landmark on the banks of the Fox River in downtown St. Charles, Ill., for 75 years. So when the city of St. Charles decided to redevelop its riverfront for multi-family housing, "The Goose" had some hard choices to make. Owner Dave Lencioni chose to build a new store one block west in the redeveloped area, a big shift after that many years in the same spot. "I've known many of my customers since I was a kid stocking shelves," says Lencioni. "But the city of St. Charles made it clear that they wanted to keep our store and make it a focal point of its new downtown plan. Their support made the choice much easier." The new store was designed by Design Services Group, Eden Prairie, Minn., a subsidiary of Minneapolis-based Supervalu. The new store took a page from the old Blue Goose by incorporating some of the old building's design features. "The tower's sloped rooflines and arched entries were inspired by the old location's original design," says Mike Klein, DSG's lead architect.
