Many food science and nutrition profes-sionals are not aware of the sweeping changes in nutrition labeling and health claims mandated by the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1993 (H.R. 1709). This legislation allows supplements to make health claims that foods containing the same nutrients cannot make. Several changes in nutrition labeling and health claims for both foods and dietary supplements have been published in the Federal Register since December 1995. The proposals would blur the the distinction between dietary supplements and food.
