In an age of increasing packaging disposal costs, government tariffs and energy recovery targets, packaging fillers and end users alike could be well advised to consider the benefits of choosing more environmentally friendly solutions. Yet what alternatives are available, and what cost savings can be made? According to Dave Scotting, of FDL Packaging Group, the ever-growing pressure placed on organisations of all sizes, regarding the types of packaging used in the manufacture, storage and distribution of intermediate products and raw materials, means now could be an opportune time to consider the benefits of moving to more cost-effective packaging solutions. "Whilst the drive towards environmentally-friendly packaging has always been strongest in the UK and Europe, until recently, the real emphasis had been traditionally confined to the retail and finished pack marketplace," says Dave Scotting. "Now, the increasing cost burden of meeting environmental tariffs, combined with the growing expense and inconvenience of disposal, means the focus on choosing environmentally-friendly packaging solutions is rapidly gaining pace as it moves down through the supply chain and impacts directly on the way bulk packaging is being specified."
