Having Gone through an intensive familiarisation on their new mounts - de Havilland Mosquito FB. VIs - 613 Squadron was ready for low-level and dive-bombing attacks deep into occupied Europe from its base at Lasham, Hampshire. The first raid was by six aircraft on December 31,1943, on a V-1 flying-bomb launching site near Maintenay, France, dive bombing from 1,500ft (547m) and returning at 'ground level' - 30 to 50ft was the norm! All operations during January and February 1944 were at low level against heavily-defended targets. Many 'Mossies' were hit, but most flew back on one engine or were otherwise badly damaged.
