After his third tour of operations Leonard received a second Bar to his DSO and was promoted to Group Captain at 25 -the youngest of this rank in the RAF-but was off operations and returned to Marston Moor, Yorks, this time as Station Commander. Training crews in tired HP Halifaxes was not his idea of fighting the enemy and he yearned to get back on 'ops'. Wg Cdr T G 'Hamish' Mahaddie, who was in Don Bennetts Pathfinder group, told this writer: "We wanted Leonard with us for Pathfinder training, but Don vetoed his application. I never knew why, perhaps they did not see eye-to-eye about target marking."
