During World War One, the residents of a Devon market town sponsored the purchase of a Sopwith Camel for the Royal Flying Corps and it was named, appropriately Newton Abbot. Just over 20 years later, the same townsfolk subscribed £5,000 to purchase a presentation Supermarine Spitfire named Newtonia.
