At the eng of June 1944,I joined 57 Squadron at East Kirkby in Lincolnshire - I was 19. We did several training flights on Avro Lancaster Ills before our first 'op' on July 15. This was a raid on the railway goods yards at Nevers in the south of France, which was spectacular but uneventful.rnOn July 18 we took part in the 1,000-bomber daylight raid on Caen. After dropping our bombs we turned for home and I had a 'grandstand' view from the rear turret. The whole area was covered in smoke and dust to about 5,000ft (1,524m). It was also amazing to see so many aircraft in the sky at once.
