The skies over Reno, Nevada once again shook to the sound of modified warbirds as the National Championship Air Races were held on September 16-20. The event's unlimited class allows competitors to dramatically upgrade warbird powerplants to determine thernquickest of the quick. P-51 Mustangs were not quite as dominant as usual, but Strega once again took top honours, this year piloted by 22-year-old Steven Hinton. John Penney flying Rare Bear, an F8F-2 Bearcat, came second after the eight-lap 67-mile race, some 13 seconds adrift. In the T-6 class Nick Macy's Six Cat, an AT-6G, won a close contest with last year's runner-up, Alfred Goss in SNJ-6 Warlock.
