Rodney Simmonds believed the unoccupied Spitfire that he shot up on June 22,1944, to have been flown by Plt Off Ian Smith. Post-war, Rodney went on to become a Minister of Parliament in Rhodesia and there he got to meet his 'target', for Ian Smith became Prime Minister of that country.rnWith the advent of war, Ian Smith joined the Southern Rhodesian Air Force and then the RAF. In October 1943 his Hurricane crashed on takeoff in Egypt and he received serious facial and other injuries. Plastic surgery and much corrective work to his spine followed, but he was able to go back to 'ops' and joined 237 Squadron on Corsica.
