Given the remarkable numbers of Ilyushin 11-2 Shturmoviks used in the Great Patriotic War, comprising roughly 30 per cent of the Red Army Air Force's overall strength, it is no surprise that so many highly decorated men (and women) partly owed their success to the machine. Most Il-2s served with attack aircraft divisions (ShAPs), with several of these going on to become 'elite' Guards units (GShAPs) in recognition of their outstanding impact in battle.
