Many non-aviation enthusiasts passing a derelict wartime airfield would consider it an eyesore and would be keen for it to be redeveloped. This is just what has happened in some cases -many have become industrial estates, retail parks, housing developments or have reverted to agriculture, their former roles long forgotten. One such site is close to my home in Ormskirk, Lancashire -the former Royal Naval Air Station Burscough, or HMS Ringtail. I learned to ride a motorcycle on one of its runways back in the 1970s. Over the years I have combined my love of aviation with another passion, local history, and studied the heritage of 'my' airfield. For me Burscough is not a blot on the landscape, it's a fount of heritage.
