Nimrod R.1 unveiled at Cosford

RAF Museum Cosford unveiled its latest acquisition, HS Nimrod R.1 XV249, before an invited audience on September 28. The aircraft is one of only four R.1 models to have served with the RAF. It was originally built as an MR.1 and first flew on December 22, 1970, before being delivered to 206 Squadron at Kinloss, Scotland, the following year. It was converted into an MR.2 in 1984 and to an R.1 in 1995. It has flown more than 18,000 hours in service, including stints in Malta and Libya, prior to retirement in June 2011.
