First flown by Alex Roberts. Third development aircraft out of a batch of 23 PR.9s for the RAF built by Shorts at Sydenham, Northern Ireland. Declared off flight test. Used by both Shorts and English Electric for trials, including RR Avon 206 (Sep 1959) and tropical tests in Bahrain (December 1959). Issued to the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment (AAEE) at Boscombe Down, Wiltshire, for service acceptance. Returned to Sydenham for modifications including substitutio of the side-ways facing navigator position with the hinged nose format. Re-issued to AAEE for final release for service in May 1963. To 15 Maintenance Unit, Wroughton, Wiltshire, for pre-service preparation. Issued to HQ Malta, for use as a fleet reserve by units based a Luqa.
