Owing to its size and shape, the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was affectionately nicknamed 'Jug' by those who flew it (because it resembled a bulky milk jug, according to some), and while its fame may have been overshadowed by that of the North American P-51 Mustang, its success is beyond doubt. An aircraft designed, tested and operated entirely within the war years, it became an outstanding fighter and fighter-bomber, mostly serving with the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF).
