While it was not exported widely, the English Electric Lightning achieved great fame in its homeland, partly because it became the only all-British fighter capable of flying at twice the speed of sound. This year marks the type's 60th anniversary, the prototype having first flown on August 4,1954. Artist Stuart Black has issued a special new print, illustrating both the aircraft that made that first flight - P.1 WG760 - and an ultimate example of the breed, Lightning F.6 XS904. The latter is today maintained in a functional state by the Lightning Preservation Group at Bruntingthorpe, Leics. The print measures 450 × 320mm (A3) and costs £9, which includes UK postage and packaging. A mug featuring the same illustration is also available at the same price. See the website for ordering and contact details.
