Super Sabre Follies

I had been flying the F-84F Thunderstreak at Turner Air Force Base in Georgia in 1957 as part of the Strategic Air Command assigned to the 31 st Fighter Wing. SAC turned us over to Tactical Air Command, renamed us the 31st Fighter-Bomber Wing, took away our F-84s and gave us a brand new fighter called the North American F-100D Super Sabre. Nicknamed the 'Hun' - short for Hundred - the F-100 had been flying with the air force since the mid-1950s. After a few redesigns, including a change to the wing area, the addition of landing flaps and a taller tail, the D-model was the latest and greatest of the 'Century Fighters' series at that point.
