Sheffield-born Archibald 'Archie' Boyd was educated at Harrow School, where he became a sergeant in the Officer Training Corps, before going to Trinity College, Oxford. He joined the University Air Squadron and trained to fly before cutting short his studies on the outbreak of war to join the RAF. He was posted to 600 (City of London) Squadron, equipped with obsolescent Blenheim fighters, and flew throughout the Battle of Britain on night sorties but always claimed that he "didn't really qualify as one of the 'Few'". Despite this modest claim, he took part in many night patrols from Manston in Kent during the German Blitz on London.
