I read the 'Beaufighter exposed on the sands' letter in the August issue with interest and can assure readers that the aircraft in guestion was not forgotten about until the early 1960s. In 1945, two of us waded over to the site of the ditched Beaufighter - marked only by a single airscrew blade protruding from the beach. Scooping away the sand with bare hands we quickly encountered the cockpit Perspex. At this juncture we heard a clear message from the nearby Haile Sand Fort (conveyed by megaphone), warning us to leave the danger area because of the presence of a torpedo.
