One hundred years ago war raged in Europe and further afield. Later known as the Great War, the conflict cost millions of lives and introduced the large-scale use of many new weapons - tanks and poison gas being just two. Another was the use of airpower, first in the scouting and reconnaissance role,later as fighters and bombers. Today, museums all over the world are busy commemorating the centenary of the Great War and Tangmere Military Aviation Museum in West Sussex has opened two new exhibits devoted to airpower and its use in the era. There is a 'visitor friendly' replica cockpit of a Royal Aircraft Factory SE.5a scout (see panel on page 42) and an exhibition devoted to Major Charles Dixon mc dfc; the last commander of 29 Squadron during the conflict.
