摘要

Known as the Tuskegee Airmen, from the unit‘s origins in the Alabama training base of the same name, the 332nd Fighter Group was made up of African-Americans. The unit famously overcame racial prejudice and discrimination to become one of the very elite fighter units of World War Two. On March 24, 1945, operating from Italy, the Tuskegees in their P-51 Mustangs encountered the Messerschmitt Me 262; the fighter that Adolf Hitler hoped would turn the tide of war. Among the pilots who came up against the faster and more heavily armed jets were 1st Lts Roscoe Brown and Earl R Lane and 2nd Lt Charles V Brantley. All three wanted to do much more than defeat the Germans. A 1925 Army War College study concluded that because 'they lacked intelligence and were cowardly, 'blacks' would never be able to fly aircraft of any type'. Bad enough that the enemy touted ideas about a master race; their own country had a segregated military.
