Following the feature on Priwall in the June edition of FlyPast, readers may be interested in what survives at the former Luftwaffe Erprobungsstelle Tarnewitz. Located less than an hour's drive along the Baltic coast from Travemunde, Tarnewitz was a weapons establishment aimed at developing new, more powerful aircraft armament. By 1939, the large airfield, hangars and workshops were in use, and during following years the base developed various types of aircraft weaponry. Immediately after the war, the base was taken over first by the Americans and then by the British before, in July 1945, the Russians arrived and began systematically demolishing the buildings, roads and anything else linked to the site's wartime role. Today, Tarnewitz is a holiday resort with extensive housing covering a large area where the hangars and workshops once stood.
