The Grumman Avenger

By the end of World War Two, Grumman had established a reputation for designing and building outstanding naval combat aircraft. The Avenger - a rugged, three-seat torpedo bomber - was among them, despite making an inauspicious debut during the Battle of Midway in June 1942. Unlike most of its contemporaries, the big Grumman continued to serve long after the end of hostilities, and many variants were developed post-war to fill anti-submarine and early warning roles, some fitted with distinctive underfuselage radomes.
