Test pilot 'Eddie' Allen eased back the control column on the prototype of what was hoped would be a war-winning bomber at Boeing Field, Seattle, Washington State, on September 21, 1942. This was the XB-29 Superfortress and the second example was airborne three days before the end of the year. What had started as the so-called 'Hemisphere Defense Weapon' in early 1940 was a closely guarded secret.
