Spitfire replica will salute 'secret' workers

A full-scale fibreglass replica of Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Ⅸ EN398, the fighter flown by top-scoring RAF pilot AVM 'Johnnie' Johnson, is to be put on display in Salisbury, Wiltshire, next year. The model has been built by Stefan Bailey of Norfolk's GB Replicas after a successful fundraising drive by the Secret Spitfires Charity, which aims to honour the many workers who built the famous fighters in and around Salisbury during World War Two. Hundreds of young men and women, plus elderly men and a handful of engineers, constructed the aircraft for the RAF in some secrecy after Luftwaffe raids had targeted the better known factory sites. Some of those involved did not discuss their role until after the war ended.
