Socially Distanced Stunner

When FlyPast produced its Airshow Guide earlier this year, our calendar was brimming. However, as COVID-19 took hold and the world locked down, the majority were soon scribbled out with 'CANCELLED', while the odd event was marked 'POSTPONED'. However, despite the backdrop of an extraordinarily challenging operating environment, the Shuttleworth Collection found an innovative way to meet government guidelines and maintain social distancing: a 'drive-in' airshow. With tickets sold in advance, this secured a 5m~2 parking bay, which left ample room around the vehicle to allow occupants to comfortably revel in the planned three-hour flying display. Spacious walkways between each row made it easy for attendees to get to and from the designated 'welfare zones', which provided refreshments, toilets and hand sanitiser. Despite this incredibly different approach, it must be said the exciting atmosphere associated with Old Warden wasn't affected.
