BUILDING THE SPANISH DUXFORD

To compare Spain's relatively humble Cuatro Vientos airfield with the UK's legendary Duxford might seem a little pretentious if you focus purely on facts and statistics. However, Cuatro Vientos is currently home to the nation's largest concentration of historic aircraft. What's more, it's getting bigger all the time. Established more than a century ago, Cuatro Vientos was chosen in 1911 to become a training facility for pilots and a centre for flight testing. Over time, activity steadily increased, and in November 1947 it became home to the Real Aero Club de Espana (RACE, Royal Aero Club of Spain). Sadly, a huge urban development has sprung up over the last two decades, endangering the airfield's future despite initiatives to preserve it.
