In the two decades leading up to World War Two, the lore and lure of flight held a great fascination for the public. At that time aviation was still relatively 'new', and feats by solo aviators were sure to make headlines. Among the most attention-grabbing aspects of airborne activity during the 1920s and 1930s were the record-breaking and longdistance flights. Of these, Charles Lindbergh's solo non-stop crossing from New York to Paris in 1927 was the most trailblazing. This was a time when female, as well as male, aviators became well known for these dangerous, high-profile pursuits. One of them was a German aviatrix who became a legend, not just in her home country but in the wider world. She was Elly Beinhorn, and her exploits helped to put German civil aviation 'on the map' during the inter-war period.
