When Howard Robard Hughes Jr was a child, it wasn't apparent he was destined for greatness. Born sometime in late 190S in Houston, Texas, it was said he was very timid, unsociable and indifferent as a child. Like many of that era, there is no official birth certificate. Nicknamed 'Sonny', Howard possessed a penchant for all things mechanical, often disassembling devices and reconstructing them again with ease. In 1916, at the age of 12, he built his first radio transmitter using parts from a doorbell and began broadcasting to a 15-mile (24km) radius. Forever tinkering, he and his father Howard Sr converted a bicycle into a motorcycle - alarming their neighbours, who had never seen such a contraption. Hoping Sonny would become an engineer, his father encouraged his efforts by giving him space to work at his tool company.
