摘要

The UK has sometimes been referred to as 'a vast aircraft carrier anchored off the northwest coast of Europe', especially when describing its 'special relationship' with the US. However, that connection has also led to numerous airfields being established in Britain to accommodate US military aircraft - hundreds of these have all but disappeared, or "melted into the landscape" as the author puts it. But thanks to Paul Bingley's detailed examination of 50 such sites, including the small handful still in use, their significance is remembered via concise text and high-quality imagery. Comprising four chapters, it explores the early years of US operations from the UK, the nation's subsequent presence, the association between the two powers and what remains of the bases today. This fascinating read contains 100 images that help tell the story; many are previously unpublished. Bingley has created a useful resource that will appeal to aviation enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic. Anyone interested in the fate of former airfield sites should add this to their reading list.
