Rapid RAF expansion to meet the growing threat of Nazi Germany required additional aircraft storage/repair facilities and a network of Aircraft Storage Units (ASUs). Cosford, in Shropshire, was selected as a site for one of the latter but it was soon destined for even greater things. As the air force increased in size, the urgent need for more personnel overwhelmed the RAF's existing training units at Halton, Cranwell and Uxbridge. Having come to the conclusion that a number of Technical Training Schools could ease the manpower and knowledge gaps it was suggested that the ASUs could house the new schools. And once again Cosford fit the bill.
