The tailwheel tiller had torn through the side of the rudder's balsa frame, the wheel assembly was dangling from its bracket and the control horn was pulled loose. The cause of the damage seemed obvious. The tailwheel and trailing strut had been pushed hard and far enough to the side to override the control horn's restraint on the rudder. This pulled the horn free as the rudder continued to turn by the force of the tiller. When the rudder stopped, by contact with the elevator, the tiller, continuing to rotate, pushed through the balsa. Previous repair attempts indicated this failure had occurred a time or two before. This is a description of my friend's Cub when I first saw it.
