Had the Siam Air Force received its six P-64s the writer feels that they soon would have been six smoking piles of crumpled aluminum around the Siam landscape. When pitted against the agile, more powerful, lower wing loading Mitsubishi Zero, flown by pilots that already had seen several months of combat service in China, the outcome would have been a foregone conclusion. The great similarity between the P-64 and Zero was the lack of armor plate.... and fuel tanks devoid of any form of self-sealing properties, with the result that both types would be prone to the Instant Flamer syndrome.
