Trimming a new plane is dependant upon how well your model is assembled on the bench. To be sure that your stab and elevator are perfectly in line with your wing and the engine thrust lines, stiff cardboard, cut to the exact airfoil shapes of both the stab and elevator, can become quite handy in the final assembly of your next model. One of the pictures accompanying this column shows how I slip these two templates over the entire stab assembly. I like to cut my template so the fit, over the tail assembly, is about half way from the tip to the root. In the case of my 2004 Hal DeBolt Stuntwagon shown, the method will work at the root.rnWhen ready to lay the stab in and/or on the fuselage, place the templates in position and attach the pushrod from the flaps (if you have flaps) to the elevator horn. Now test fit the tail surface in the location drawn on the plan and check the total tail surface for alignment with the wing and engine. Since the templates hold the elevator and stab surfaces in neutral, now all you have to worry about is making the measurements work for the total model incidence settings. Once the stab is tack-glued in place, walk away and have an iced tea or soda. Go back an hour later and re-check your measurements and glue it in permanently.
